History of Guadeloupe

 

The Guadeloupe was discovered November 4 1493 by Christophe Colomb The name of the island was given by this last at the time of its unloading to Sainte-Marie of Capesterre, to pay homage to " Maria Health of Guadeloupe de Estramadura ". The island at the time was populated by the Indians the Caribbean, warlike people originating in the area of Venezuela They called then their island " Caloucæra " or " Karukéra ", which meant " the island with beautiful water ". June 28 1635 (first French), then by the Company of the Western Indies in 1666. It returned to the Crown into 1674.

In 1644, the culture started of cane with sugar thus ensuring the prosperity of the island.
No black slave was imported there in dependencies of the Guadeloupe, the dry island of Désirade, the archipelago of Holy and Holy Barthelemy, the agricultural lack of surface never allowed the culture of the cane sugar. In 1759, during the the Seven year old war (1756-1763), the Guadeloupe is occupied by the English who melt the wearing of Point with Clown. In 1763, the treaty of Paris puts an end to the war and restores the Guadeloupe and Martinique in France.
It is in 1775 that the island obtains its autonomy with respect to Martinique, and that it launches out in the massive cocoa export.
The revolution propagate its ideas and causes the civil war in the islands
