The Old town of Pointe-à-Pitre is a
pole of commercial activity, limited in the west by the mangrove and the Salted
River, and in the east by the Commune des Abymes, in the south-east by the
Marina. The vibrating animation of the Pointe-à-Pitre mornings or the streets
on Sunday, offers you a multitude of subjects of interest, curiosities and of
astonishing scenes : the Frébault, de Nozières and Schoelcher streets with
their shops where craftsmen and salesmen work; the Saint-Antoine Market, with
its coloured fruit mountains, its spice perfumes and the jovial smile of the
saleswomen; the church Saint Pierre and Saint Paul built in 1849 with its
imposing frontage and its beautiful stained-glasses. In the streets of the town
centre you can find beautiful alignments of creole houses with balcony (Peynier,
Schoelcher, Jean Jaurès, Nassau streets ...) and in the Achille Rene Boisneuf
street that stand the Saint John Perse native house and the very remarkable old
Town-hall inaugurated in 1885.
